Shape: Head, thorax and abdomen distinct. Often long and narrow, some species have a more pointed abdomen.

Colour: Generally black, but some species are brightly coloured.

Antennae: Long

Distinguishing features: Wing cases only cover the first few segments, segments on the abdomen are visible.

Adults eat: Other insects. Adults and larvae of Devil's coach horse are predatory

Larvae are not museum pests
 
Damage: none

Often found on: Traps near exit doors. These are outdoor insects.
